Can DNA become the next generation storage disk?
Image and original article appeared on PC Mag Researchers from Columbia University and the New York Genome Center (NYGC) have been able to store large amounts of data on a DNA sequence. Six types of files were stored on the DNA, including a full computer operating system, an Amazon gift card, a French film, a computer virus, a Pioneer plaque and a 1948 study. The process of recovering the stored files was facilitated in part by Twist Bioscience, a San Francisco startup that boasts of digital to biological data translation. Worried about the viability of this technique? According to a computer science professor at Columbia Engineering,”DNA won’t degrade over time like cassette tapes and CDs, and it won’t become obsolete—if it does, we have bigger problems,”.
